2023 - A Year in review
Tech-Girls is all about empowering girls to imagine and achieve their future dreams in our tech-savvy world. We provide hands-on activities that engage natural curiosity about technology fields to Kindergarten through high school. We work with partners and volunteers to provide training, resources and relationships needed to support and help participants continue their tech explorations. Here are some highlights from 2023!
- Over 125 Kindergarten through 5th graders participated in Girls' Geek Day with over 45 high school students volunteers leading activities and being amazing role models! One of those days was captured by VPM as part of a series of videos highlighting Computer Science Careers Across Virginia.
- Re-launched, Yes We Tech, a series of events for participants in 5th through 8th grade to get a behind-the-scenes look at local tech companies and organizations to see tech in action, meet role models, and do cool hands-on activities. This included maker activities hosted by the Women's Maker Program at the Robertson Media Center at UVA, exploring how programs are developed at Center for Open Science, learning about the history and playing pinball and video games at Decades Arcade, and exploring robotics and filmmaking at Light House Studio. Don't miss the upcoming Yes We Tech events on January 30 at WillowTree and February 13 at Light House Studio! More details below in Live & Local.
- Organized the 10th annual Bio-Med Tech-Girls program, a unique collaboration between Charlottesville Women in Tech, the department of Biomedical Engineering, the School of Education, and the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia. The program is all about providing inspiration, community building and hands-on computer science (CS) and biomedical engineering (BME) activities for young women in high school, so they can get a glimpse of the vast opportunities available in these fields.
- Launched the first Speed Mentoring with Charlottesville Women in Tech. This was an opportunity for high school students who identify as female or non-binary to learn about future STEM opportunities and connect with women in STEM.
- Provided hands-on tech and computer science activities at Kid*Vention Family Science Festival.
- Continued to be a source of information about local and global STEM-related activities and events through the Tech-Girl Monthly, Summer STEM Guide, social media and website.
