2024 Highlights
Thirty-three participants from eight high schools joined Engineering-Girls@UVA along with 20+ UVA student volunteers! Since 2014, over 175 high school students have participated in the program along with hundreds of volunteers.
The behind-the-scenes lab tours are always a highlight and participants got to explore both BME and CEE labs plus the Link Lab. CEE lab tours included exploring 3D and sustainable concrete, observing tensile and compression testing and touring the concrete canoe lab. BME lab tours included learning about muscles in the Blemker M3 lab, discussing cancer in the Sheybani and Price labs and exploring capillaries and diabetes in the Peirce-Cottler lab. |
Participants also explored the Center for Diversity in Engineering and heard from guest speakers, like Maera Habashi, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Lunch time panelists shared their passion for engineering and offered inspiration for future college and career explorations.
For their final project, the participants in the CEE track focused on designing, building, and presenting models of sustainable city concepts and participants in the BME track focused on designing a device to help patients with Parkinson's disease manage their medication. Family and friends celebrated their design solutions at annual the Demo Party on Friday! |
