Noelle's STEM Corner: Civil Engineering
Happy New Year! This month we are focusing on civil engineering. This topic gave me many different opportunities to explore, so the video is a bit longer. However, it's still worth it!
I know everyone’s prototypes look amazing and hopefully survived the fake hurricane. At the end of the video I mentioned a few games, I thought were fun and informative. Below are resources and games highlighted in the video plus a few bonus games:
Also, if you want to watch a few more videos on civil engineering:
Engineering is an amazing field and similar to computer science there is a large gender gap between men and women. According to aauw.org, in 2019 28% of engineers are women. Debbie Sterling shares her story as a female engineer dealing with the gender discrepancy in the field. Not only does she highlight the importance of women in engineering, she also goes through the design thinking process when creating a her toy, Goldieblox for girls.
- Disaster-Proof Housing
- What a hurricane does to a house
- Traffic Simulator
- Building a city
- Construct a bridge
- Sustainable Shaun
Also, if you want to watch a few more videos on civil engineering:
- Crash Course’s video has a bit more history and goes more in depth
- University of Bath has a short intro to the subject
- The Explorist has another intro video detailing the different projects a civil engineer could work on
- This Professor details some of the projects his students worked on
